Gold Toe's company name was originally known as Great American Knitting Mills,which opened it's doors in Bally, PA during the early part of the 20th century. The two German immigrants understood the consumers desire to have hosiery that would be more durable. Great American fashioned a sock by sewing a gold reinforcing yarn in the toe. Soon the consumers were asking for the durable "sock with the gold toe." In 2002 Great American Knitting Mills changed their name to Gold Toe Brands, Inc.
