Umbria is one of Italy's smallest regions; It lies in the shadow of its more famous neighbor, Tuscany. Umbria is a land with rolling hills that are dotted with castles, fortresses and watchtowers. It has well- preserved hill towns that produce excellent handmade ceramics. Umbria has many hills and mountains covered with chestnut groves and elm forests. Umbria has a host of monasteries which were founded by local saints. Perugia, the capital of the region, and Assisi, Umbria's most prominent city, are rich in art and architecture, as are Orvieto, Todi, and Spoleto.
